OpenAI dots vs OpenClaw: managed cloud agent or self-hosted open source?
OpenClaw made always-on personal agents popular in 2026: free, open source, and reachable from your messaging apps. Dots is OpenAI’s managed take on the same idea. ZDNet’s launch headline called it “OpenClaw declawed” (ZDNet). Here’s what you gain and give up with each.

Cost
OpenClaw costs nothing to download. What you pay for is the model it calls (API tokens, unless you run a local model) and a machine that stays on. A busy always-on agent can use a lot of tokens, so costs depend heavily on how you use it.
Dots has a predictable price: one dot is included with ChatGPT Pro or a Business Premium seat, and chatting with it doesn’t count toward your ChatGPT limits (OpenAI). See dots pricing.
Control and flexibility
OpenClaw is the flexible option. You choose the model, keep state, memory and credentials on your own hardware, and connect it to far more messaging apps (GitHub (OpenClaw Foundation)). The project began in late 2025 and went through the names Clawdbot and Moltbot before becoming OpenClaw; its creator, Peter Steinberger, joined OpenAI in February 2026 (Wikipedia).
Dots is the managed option. You get OpenAI’s model, 4,000+ app integrations through ChatGPT plugins, and setup that takes minutes, but you can’t swap the model or self-host it.
Security
This is the biggest practical difference. OpenClaw’s own documentation advises treating inbound messages as untrusted, and notes that tools run on the host by default with sandboxing optional (GitHub (OpenClaw Foundation)). Its open skill ecosystem has also been abused: Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42 found malicious ClawHub skills delivering macOS infostealers (Unit 42, Palo Alto Networks).

Frequently asked questions
Is OpenClaw free?
The software is free and open source (MIT licence). You pay for the hardware it runs on and for the AI model it calls, such as an OpenAI or Anthropic API key, unless you run a local model.
Is OpenClaw the same as OpenAI dots?
No. OpenClaw is an independent open-source project you host yourself. Dots is OpenAI’s managed agent inside ChatGPT. ZDNet summed up the relationship in a headline calling dots “OpenClaw declawed”.
Is OpenClaw safe?
It can be run safely, but the security is up to you. Its own docs say tools run on the host by default and sandboxing is optional, and Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42 found malicious third-party skills on ClawHub. Dots trades that flexibility for managed sandboxes and built-in approval checks.
Can I use OpenClaw in the UK or EU?
Yes. Because you install it yourself, there are no regional restrictions beyond those of the model provider you connect. That makes it one of the few always-on agent options in Europe while dots excludes Pro users there.
